Windsor Smith
How has your design aesthetic evolved over the years?
My aesthetic is always in flux. I always have my ear to the floor for inspiration. It comes in through so many mediums. It has become more refined and more relevant. Slightly smarter, breathier, while still firmly rooted in classicism.
What city inspires you the most?
Florence, Italy and the island of Capri.
What is the most rewarding/fulfilling aspect of your job?
Changing the way people live and supporting how they move about in their
lives.
Did you have a mentor growing up that influenced your career path?
A Russian ballet teacher taught me to see in a series of lines. My world history teacher taught me how to tell a great story. My parents taught me the importance of candor. Stephen Drucker taught me so many things. Axel Vervoordt, at a dinner in Venice, taught me the importance of tangoing whenever the feeling takes you. They are all mentors of sorts.
How does living in Southern California influence your design work?
It draws on a more casual sensibility underscored by pure glamour. We have the rich history of film and those great sweeping palms from which to draw inspiration. It is a sunkissed mecca with its very own vernacular.
What is your favorite place on the West Coast to visit? And why?
Winters in Ojai cannot be beat, there is a certain vibration there. Big Sur for the brisk ocean air in fall, Coronado Island for enjoying summer with friends, and Santa Barbara any time at all.
How much does your personal style influence your designs?
It is a perfect parallel to my interior design style. I love something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue…
In your opinion, how has the interior design industry changed over the years?
It is becoming less restrictive, more transparent, more alluring, more accessible. Everyone deserves to have beautiful rooms despite their economic strata. Design firms are finding new ways to reach a new demographic that is very relevant today. It’s all very exciting.
Do you collect anything?
Chunky vintage gold rings, straw hats, boxes, walking sticks, anything equine, Hermes and vintage Gucci.
What are some of the challenges of creating a Home brand?
Availability and production. Getting all of the coordinates aligned so that the desire or the dream can be realized.
What do Windsor Smith fans have to look forward to from your upcoming collections?
Vibrancy, structure and nostalgia are my cornerstones. Those principles are blooming for me now. My new outdoor collection is magical and timeless. Think of Acapulco and Tahiti in the 1950’s combined with relaxed modern glamour. SUPER sexy.
