In 1989, Lauder was diagnosedwith breast cancer and began advocating for the cause. The same year, she became the senior corporate vice president and head of fragrance development worldwide. Lauder was a co-creator of the Pink Ribbon campaign,which is recognized as a worldwide symbol of breast health and cancer awareness. In 1993 she founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which to date has raised raised more than $350 million and currently supports 186 researchers across the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia.
